Nobel Prize to a former winner of the Premio Città di Firenze per le Scienze Molecolari
The Nobel prize for medicine 2026 has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, together with Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel, for their discoveries on optogenetics and light-activated ionic channels.
Karl Deisseroth was the winner of the 2013 edition of the Premio Città di Firenze.
This is the second time that a winner of our Premio is then awarded the Nobel prize! It already happened with Emmanuelle Charpentier, awarded the Premio in 2018 and then the Nobel prize in 2020.

Congratulations to "our" Nobel prize winners! And congratulations to the Committee members of the Premio Città di Firenze, who in 2013 and 2018 have shown remarkable foresight, to the organizers of the Premio, the CERM of the University of Florence and the Fondazione Luigi Sacconi, as well as to the Fondazione CR Firenze, which has generously provided funding for the Premio since its inception in 2002.
For the future, keep an eye on the full list of winners of the Premio Città di Firenze [link: https://www.cerm.unifi.it/premio-citta-di-firenze], you may be surprised again!
